The Victorian Era Of Christmas Carol Costumes
Choosing the type of Christmas carol costumes to wear when visiting one house to another while singing carols can be stressful task; but this can be simplified by choosing the costumes that were worn during the Victorian era during the Christmas season whereby class divisions were established between the poor and rich. The poor were known to wear tattered clothing while rich wore brocade and graceful clothing. The novel ‘A Christmas Carol’ is the origin of these Christmas carol costumes that have an original outlook for any Christmas convention.
In the novel, there were other characters who wore different types of Christian carol costumes depending on their role in the book. They were Bob Cratchit who was the breadwinner of a family, Tiny Tim who was unprivileged child, Scrooge’s nephew Fred who was from a rich family and Mrs. Fezziwig and her daughters who were from a wealthy family. Bob Crachit is a working man who works for the Scrooge family thus the Christmas carol costumes that were associated with such a person were trousers with suspenders and a rolled up sleeved work shirt; for women the dressing was long, plain, black and long sleeved dresses.
For Tiny Tim who was born in poverty, the Christmas carol costumes that were associated with him included a plain shirt, ragged jacket, a small hat and knickers instead of trousers that looked like that they were worn each and every day. For the girls, puffy sleeved, shaggy dresses that closed in the back. During this era, children dressed as elders but due to poverty, Tiny Tim was not able to reach those standards.
The Christmas carol costumes associated with Scrooge’s nephew, Fred were snug pants, of a natural color with a black hat; a white shirt with a silk, dark scarf and a coat with tails that accentuate his superiority. The Christmas carol costumes associated with Mrs. Fezziwig and her daughters were very graceful suited for their class. They were dressed in puffy sleeved, scoop necked dresses that have tiny bodices and sharp waists, and bell shaped full skirt from the hoop beneath the dress. When outside the costume was accentuated with bonnets and their hair was in ringlets.
